1. From Philip J. Pirages, Fine Books and manuscripts (McMinnville, OR 97128; www.pirages.com) Catalogue 49, item 35: A leaf with a miniature depicting Sebastian being shot full of arrows, from a book of hours probably executed by Henri d'Orquevaulz or a member of his workshop during the second quarter of XV. Sebastian, bound to a pillar and suspended somewhat above the ground, bristles with arrows, as he looks with sorrow and serenity at the two archers below. Covered with underclothes only from waist to hip, the saint watches as the persecutors do their work. Image and edited text with the permission of Mr. Pirages. |

2. From Philip J. Pirages, Fine Books and manuscripts (McMinnville, OR 97128; www.pirages.com) Catalogue 49, item 59: A small miniature painting of Sebastian, cut from a Latin Book of Hours, whose color and line suggests the work of the Master of the Dresden Prayer Book, whose atelier was active in Bruges for about twenty years, beginning in 1470. Sebastian stands with his hands and feet roped to a tree, wearing blue leggings with a white shirt tucked into and hanging from his waistband. Two archers stand drawing bows at close range, and four arrows are already fixed in the saint's body, with rivulets of blood on his arms and torso.
